Sparkle. Bright. Wonder. Sequins are small, shiny, disk-shaped ornaments often made of plastic or metal. Sequins add texture and light to the ordinary. Humans are hardwired to love sparkle because our brains instinctively link bright, reflective light to water, a vital source of survival. This evolutionary trait triggers a dopamine release, including feelings of happiness and joy.
This artwork was created for Parish Episcopal School’s annual Gala with the theme “Havana Nights.” Having worked with Cuban artists for several years, hearing their stories of Havana nightlife, I was inspired by the bold colors and sparkle of Havana’s Tropicana Club and dancers. I collaged hand-painted paper sequins to reflect this energy: bright reds, sunny yellows, deep purples, vibrant greens, and dazzling pinks captured in motion.
